Meetings are held throughout term welcoming staff and students from across UG, PGR and PGT to discuss the latest cinematic and television releases and hone your skills in film reviewing. We occasionally organise larger events like conferences and workshops to focus in more depth on a specific person or subject.

There is also a Film Society organised and run by the student body, set up to supplement the theoretical side of the course with practical filmmaking. The society organises a range of events throughout the year, and membership is open to all students. For more information, please see the Film Society page on the Students' Guild website.

Radical British Screens Symposium

Phil Wickham and Lisa Stead
Friday 3rd September 2010
Bush House, Central Bristol

Phil Wickham, Curator of the Bill Douglas Centre at Exeter, and co-ordinator of the Screen Studies South West Research Network and and Lisa Stead, Exeter PGR student in Film Studies will be attending and presenting research at Radical British Screens.

This one-day symposium, hosted by the Film Studies Research Group, University of the West of England, Bristol and the Screen Studies South West Network, focuses on the history and contemporary articulations of a tradition of ‘radical’ British TV and cinema. The symposium explores the landscape of current research in the field, including history, aesthetics, industries, institutions and cultural moments. It also interrogates the use of the term ‘radical’ in this context.

The symposium culminates in an evening screening of Fish Tank (Andrea Arnold, 2009) at the Arnolfini arts cinema, introduced by a keynote talk by Dr Claire Monk (De Montfort University).

Lunch, refreshments, and the film screening are included in the registration fee. The screening will be followed by an optional meal at Bordeaux Quay Brasserie at the delegate’s own expense.
