Dr Zlatina Nikolova

Lecturer in English and Film

Prior to joining the University of Exeter, I completed a PhD in early film criticism at Royal Holloway, University of London.

Since then my research interests and teaching practice have expanded beyond the realms of erly 20th-century modernisms to examine more broadly women's participation in film culture, considering their representation in visual culture, especially depictions of the female body, and their involvement behind camera and in film criticism.

I have recently expanded into digital studies, intersecring my existing expertise in film culture and critical theory with explorations of the contemporary viewing habits and affect theory.

Currently I teach on EAF1506 Interrogating Screens, EAF1501 Major Debates in Film Theory, EAF2510 Adaptations: Text, Image, Culture and EAF2512 European Cinemas. I supervise dissertations on early film culture and modernism, women on screen and feminis theories, and the intersection of film theory and digitaal studies.

Biography

I hold degrees from Royal Holloway University of London and Goldsmiths College. Completed in 2019, my PhD focussed on the early works of Winifred Bryher, more specifically her autobiographical prose and her involvement with the POOL Group and their endeavours at filmmaking, and the journal Close Up.

I have published work on Dorothy Richardson's film criticism for Close Up and another publication on the POOL Group's film Borderline is upcoming. I am currently working on my first monograph.
